White mug cake with sprinkles on a spoon.

You’ll want this easy little Mug Cake recipe in your back pocket because it makes the perfect single-serve dessert! Especially when you don’t need or want a full cake hanging around the kitchen waiting for you to eat it. A few spoonfuls of mix and a minute in the microwave, and you’ve got a single dessert ready to enjoy just about anytime.

The Secret to Easy Mug Cakes

There are actually two secrets to making easy mug cake.

  • The first is whisking up the cake mixes ahead of time and storing them so it’s ready to go at a moment’s notice.
  • The angel food cake is what makes the recipe work, so don’t skip it. It’s what provides the lift and texture without needing extra eggs.

Store the mixed cake in a large jar OR a zipper-top bag. If you can swing it, adding a measuring spoon to the bag so you’re really ready to make this cake anytime.

You Can Make More Than One!

Although this recipe is primarily intended for a bag of mix and yields just one cake, you can easily make as many single cakes in a mug as you need or want. So, if you have friends over, hungry kids, or you’re just extra hungry, you can whip up as many as you need.

What You Need To Make Easy Mug Cakes

You only need two cake mixes to get started. The angel food cake and a second mix that can be any flavor you like.

  • angel food cake mix
  • white cake mix or any chocolate cake mix

And then to MAKE a mug cake you’ll need

Make Some Changes

Change it up by swapping the white cake mix for any other flavor of cake mix. Think lemon, strawberry, funfetti, spice and so on. Some fun combos you can make would be chocolate cake with a marshmallow and a graham cracker on top.

Or try:

  • Strawberry cake topped with Cool Whip and fresh berries
  • Pumpkin cake with a spoonful of chocolate chips stirred into the batter
  • Lemon cake with a side of lemon yogurt on the side
  • White cake with berries on top
  • Yellow cake with chocolate frosting on top

The combinations are endless!
